Summer of 2016

Well, it has been quite awhile since my last blog post, but here I am, still doing photography here on the wonderful beaches of Delmarva.  I sure am one lucky woman!  This will be my 15th year, counting my years in Baltimore, so “Happy Anniversary” to Atlantic Portrait Studios!  Yay!  Anyway, what inspired me to create a new post today was the fact that the last few emails and phone calls I have received were from families and individuals doing a “price shopping” comparison of photographers here at the beach.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand that everyone is on a budget these days and it is always wise to get value for our hard earned dollars, but the old saying of “you get what you pay for”  is true of this business as well.  Sure, you can get the Scopes guys to take your picture on the beach for a (relatively) moderate price, but chances are that you won’t want to hang your telescope picture over your fireplace.  They don’t charge a sitting fee, this is true.  But they don’t retouch your photos, they don’t customize anything, they don’t use top quality equipment, and they take your “pictures” at the most awful time of day…the midday sun on a super crowded beach.  They are not seasoned, professional photographers with a real web site, real references, real knowledge of what it takes to produce a family beach “portrait” (not “picture”).  I am not trying to belittle these guys, because they are just trying to gain the experience to actually become real photographers with their own studios someday.  There is nothing wrong with that, but if you want to pay them to do your beach portrait you might as well do the portrait yourself!  I often marvel at the idea that a family beach portrait session is somehow less important than a few extra cocktails, a few extra souvenirs,  one or two full body massages, or one expensive dinner.  After all, pictures document the memories created here at a place that you love to vacation with your family.  You should be willing to try to capture those memories at least once or twice professionally.  It will be worth the extra expense, trust me.  I wish I had a penny for all of the times that people thank me for doing their beach portrait sessions, because they become cherished memories for generations to come when the kids grow up, people pass away, or pets die.  Just a suggestion. Happy summer!

February at the Beach

So, it has been awhile since I have posted anything because it was a very busy year in 2013.  Besides all of the weddings and beach portraits that we did this past year, we hired an assistant and also did a little bit of traveling to some destination wedding locations.  Winters are very slow on Delmarva, but is a good time to reflect, regroup, and focus on the year ahead. I also love to take advantage of all of the dinner specials, cooking demos, Chamber of Commerce events, and the calm before the storm. Besides tweaking my web site a bit and reading about the various new technology advances in the industry, I have been busy with my two little Yorkies, my hubby, and planning a few road trips this year in our new RV. It is nice that we can combine business with pleasure on our road trips, and the fact that we can take the doggies and all be together is so awesome! The OC Bridal Show is coming up in April, and it should be fun! They had a great turnout last year, so hopefully we will fill up our 2014 calendar with a few more weddings. St. Patrick’s Day will be here before you know it, and the parade is always fun to watch. Spring is around the corner! I love doing early spring portrait sessions, because people seem so happy and excited when the weather breaks and it shows in their images!

End of summer update

Just finishing up with our busy beach portrait season and trying to catch up a bit.  It has been a very busy and successful year for us, and hopefully 2014 will be even better.  Hired a new employee and she seems to be working out wonderfully.  Happy fall!  Time to concentrate on holiday orders, weddings, school portraits now…

No pictures during ceremony??? What???

I have to vent for a minute about a wedding that we photographed on Saturday.  Beautiful day, nice bride & groom, and everything looked very promising.  That is, until we were told by the priest a few minutes before the ceremony that we were not allowed to take ANY pictures of the entire ceremony.  None.  Not just turn off the flash-NO PICTURES. Period. So, we were the only paid photographers whose duties were to document the wedding, and we were the only ones not permitted to do so while all of the guests were snapping away!  I was very frustrated, to say the least, and in order to keep the bride from getting anymore upset I calmed her down by promising that we could reenact the important moments.  I hope I never run into that priest again, and I will tell my future brides about him so that they make sure that they do not book with him.  He needs to step out of the dark ages.  We asked her about this very thing in our meeting with her, and she assured us that he told her “just no flash” was allowed.  Big mistake.  This has to be made very clear before a church is booked.  This is the most important day of a young girl’s life, and it is a shame not to allow pictures of this wonderful event.

We just finished our first wedding of the season of 2013, and are gearing up for a busy spring & summer.  Learning a bunch of new things now related to photography technique and exploring new creative ways to educate our clients via social media.  It takes quite a bit of time, but it is well worth it.  Need to keep up with my blog, my Pinterest account, my WordPress account, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Wedding Wire, and every other social media outlet.  Whew.  Need to also make time to make beautiful images!

Beach Portrait Tip: Schedule a dusk or early morning session when the light is best, and be sure to wear matching or coordinating outfits.

Beach portrait tip: schedule your family beach portrait early in your vacation to allow extra days for bad weather and also to avoid sunburn issues. The best time of day is an hour or so before sunset, because the light is best then and also the beach is not crowded-not to mention that there should not be parking problems during this time of day.
